The work itself was perceived as handicraft as opposed to intellectual and the women operating the system were known as ‘operators’ or ‘coders’, not software developers. One piece of pretty outrageous fact is that the six women, whose software work was critical to ENIAC’s operation and performance, did not receive an invitation to the celebratory dinner for the completion of ENIAC. Yes, you read that right. However, despite the less-than-ideal conditions, women were at least present in the field. So, what happened? How did we go from a sector that was largely built and operated by women, with almost a 50/50 gender split, to a dismal 37% by 1986, and a measly 26% of the total computer science workforce today?</image:title>

      <image:caption>By the late 1960s, the ‘soft work’, which had been largely dominated by women, evolved into modern software, and the importance of women decreased. Once the industry grew more lucrative, and it became clear that those who knew how to utilise software were at an advantage, female programmers lost out despite having extensive experience and the requisite skills. SDC’s programmer profile came to shape industry demographics for decades. This pivotal study changed forever the way companies recruited and trained programmers, and impacted the tech industry’s ability to be diverse and inclusive ever after.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>One simple way that organisations can be more sensitive to First Nations Peoples on Australia Day is to consider alternative dates, or give employees a choice to work on January 26 and celebrate on a date that is not associated with the invasion and colonisation of Australia. The National Employment Standards provides a provision to allow employees and employers to substitute any public holiday for another day. The University of Wollongong is one of the most recent organisations to join this group which includes Telstra, Deloitte, KPMG and Channel 10. The University released a statement acknowledging that January 26 was not a day of celebration for all Australians and announced, “That’s why, out of respect for all First Nations peoples, in January 2023 all fixed-term and permanent employees of the University will have the flexibility to work on January 26 instead of taking the day as a public holiday,”. If staff choose to work, they can substitute either January 27 or January 30 for the public holiday. They are complex and deeply intertwined with the history and culture of the sector, calcifying over many decades. The automatic question has been, “how can we attract more tech women?” when it should have been “how can we keep our tech women?”. Strategies that exceedingly focus on branding rather than systemic change have been, unsurprisingly, largely ineffective. Attraction campaigns (what some might call ‘window dressing’) generally result in depleted HR budgets and zero ROI for CTOs. Inevitably, “diversity fatigue” set in and invoked a million collective eye-rolls at the mere mention of D&amp;I.</image:caption>

Tick these boxes, pay the fees, and voila, you’re an employer of choice for all women! Performative policies have also done untold damage to D&amp;I over the years. We hope to see them obsoleted as more and more organisations realise they have to actually do the work.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>One of the main issues is that the push for gender equality has become a women’s problem. This can be seen through diversity initiatives that focus solely on women, such as Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). These bring women in an organisation together to mentor and support each other, the idea being that there is greater power in numbers, and by sharing their experiences and struggles they will be able to enact change. But while these efforts are helpful to some extent, the reality is that as women don’t have gender parity in the top-tier roles the changes these groups are able to make can be limited. So although it’s necessary to have the support of other women, without the involvement of men in leadership positions any results are hard-won.</image:caption>

The best individual contributors are the ones who have done time in management. And the best technical leaders in the world are often the ones who do both. Back and forth. Like a pendulum. I’ve done this a few times myself now; start out as an early or first infra engineering hire, build the stack, then build the team, then manage the team, then … leave and start it all over again. I get antsy, I get restless. I start to feel like I know what I’m doing (… a telltale sign something’s wrong).</image:title>

They need to be able to size up a junior engineer’s ability and craft a meaningful assignment, one that pushes their boundaries without crushing them … then do the same for another twenty contributors. This is management work, from the slightly shifted perspective of “Get Thing X Done” not “care for these people”.</image:caption>
